The city has shot up from fourth to second place in a survey carried out by Runner’s World magazine.
The magazine said: "Running is thriving in the Scottish capital, thanks to the successful jogscotland initiative, the annual Edinburgh Marathon Festival and the council's Activcity project which aims to make Edinburgh the most physically active city in Europe by 2020."
The capital has an active network of both jogscotland groups and scottishathletics-affiliated running clubs.
Nigel Holl, Chief Executive of scottishathletics, which runs jogscotland, said: "We're delighted to hear jogscotland is making such a difference.
Nigel Holl, Chief Executive of scottishathletics, which runs jogscotland, said: "We're delighted to hear jogscotland is making such a difference.
"Close to 25,000 people are part of jogscotland across the country and we have a large number of very active groups in Edinburgh.
"Our supportive programmes are designed to make getting fit an enjoyable experience for people of all abilities. The aim is not only to increase the number of people running, but make sure they have a great time doing it, and stick with it for the long-term."
Glasgow – where the Great Scottish Run will be held this weekend – is also doing well, finishing sixth in the poll, up from joint eleventh.
